Cards on the Table: Why Outshining AI?

What was I thinking when I dreamed up Outshining AI?

I’ll explain as best I can.

At one level, it comes down to trying to get a grip—like so many of us are—on this rocket ship of a technology. Not just the tools and technical details, but what AI may mean for us now and in the years ahead.

And not only as workers, consumers, or citizens.

As human beings.

Some would say as spiritually evolving human beings.

Spiritually evolving people? That’s a big assumption, isn’t it?

Yes, it is. Human history gives us plenty of reasons to be skeptical. We are capable of wisdom and compassion, but also fear, selfishness, and division.

Even so, the “why” behind Outshining AI rests on a simple belief: if we hope to guide increasingly powerful AI wisely, we must grow in wisdom ourselves.

We need to grow in integrity and wisdom alongside AI’s relentlessly accelerating smarts.

That, I believe, is our path forward.

Heaven knows we won’t be able to outsmart AI. But I believe we possess strengths that no machine can replicate.

Many traditions teach that we carry something sacred within us. Genesis describes humanity as being made in the image and likeness of God. Jesus expressed a similar idea when he said, “The kingdom of God is within you.”

Whatever language one prefers, the point is the same: we possess capacities that extend beyond computation. Conscience. Compassion. Courage. Love. Wisdom.

If we hope to exercise wise stewardship over rapidly advancing AI, we must cultivate these qualities with equal urgency.

Patience. Honesty. Courage. Kindness.

We must also keep watch over those tendencies that pull us in the opposite direction—fear, pride, greed, and resentment.

Because the more powerful our tools become, the more important it is that the people using them remain grounded in what is true and good.

Outshining AI exists to share what I and others are learning, and to help all of us develop real skills with these extraordinary tools without losing ourselves in the process.

To me, stewardship means treating knowledge as a trust held for the common good.

With that standard in mind, Outshining AI will test, question, explore, and explain. We’ll highlight what uplifts, challenge what doesn’t, and remain curious throughout.

I’m studying as hard as I can, writing as plainly as I can, and inviting you to do the same.

Together, perhaps we can find a way forward—learning to master AI tools without ever handing those same tools the keys to our conscience.
