How ChatGPT Works: Learning vs. Adapting

How does ChatGPT work? It’s a question many people ask after spending time working with the AI. One common point of confusion is whether ChatGPT actually learns from conversations. The answer turns out to be more interesting than a simple yes or no.

Me: I’m curious. What do you think of these highly detailed back-and-forth conversations we have on writing? Do you also learn from them? Or is it just me learning? If you also learn, how specifically do you learn and what exactly do you learn?

Chat: Short version: you’re definitely learning—and I’m adapting, not learning in the human sense.

Here’s how it works:

  • In the moment: I track everything you tell me in this conversation—tone, word choices, constraints, edits—and use it immediately. That’s why I can iterate on phrasing, avoid terms you dislike, and keep your house style consistent.

  • Across chats: I don’t automatically learn from our conversations or permanently update my core knowledge from them. However, if memory is enabled and you ask me to remember something—for example, “save this as my style rule”—I can store it and recall it in future chats.

  • What I “learn”: Practically speaking, I build a working understanding of your preferences: sentence rhythm, where you want subheads, how strongly to make claims, your tolerance for jargon, and when to add breadcrumbs or cautions. I also recognize patterns—like your preference for active verbs, tight claims, and balanced caution in AI stories.

  • What I don’t do: I don’t update my underlying training from our conversation, and I don’t remember private details unless you’ve asked me to save them.

If you want, say the word and I’ll save a compact Outshining AI writing checklist (tone, dos and don’ts, phrasing preferences) so I can follow it automatically in future drafts.

Me: Yes, please do that. I’ve previously asked you to remember my writing style and preferences, but it doesn’t hurt to reinforce that request. Very interesting explanation. Thanks.

Chat: Noted—saved as a persistent Outshining AI writing checklist. I’ll follow it automatically going forward. If anything on that list changes, just say, “Update my checklist,” and tell me what you’d like to tweak.

Understood how ChatGPT works helped me see why it often feels like it’s learning. In reality, what it’s doing is subtler: recognizing patterns, adapting to the conversation, and remembering only what we intentionally choose to save.
